Job Responsibilities

Volunteer ESL Instructor – Job Responsibilities

Purpose:
To teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult learners in a supportive, faith-based environment, helping students build communication skills, confidence, and community connection.

Responsibilities:

Teach one ESL class per week (Basic through Level 4) using provided curriculum and lesson plans.

Create a welcoming and encouraging classroom environment that reflects Christian values.

Prepare and organize instructional materials and activities in advance.

Assess student progress through informal observation and participation.

Maintain attendance records and communicate updates to the Operations Lead.

Attend instructor meetings or training sessions as scheduled.

Encourage student participation in community and ministry activities.

Collaborate with other instructors and volunteers to support program goals.

Uphold the mission and values of River City Hope Street in all interactions.

Time Commitment:
1–2 classes per week, typically 2 hours per class, plus preparation time (approx. 3–4 hours total weekly during a 17-week semester).

Operations Lead / ESL Program Coordinator

Job Qualifications

Volunteer ESL Instructor – Qualifications

Personal faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to serving others through Christian ministry.

Genuine compassion for adult learners from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; patient, encouraging, and adaptable teaching style.

Ability to maintain a respectful, welcoming classroom environment that reflects Christian values.

Willingness to pray with or for students as appropriate to the ministry setting.

Previous teaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience preferred but not required.

Comfortable using provided ESL curriculum and learning materials.

Reliable, organized, and able to prepare lessons and track attendance.

Willingness to attend volunteer training sessions and team meetings.

Must be 18 years or older and pass a background check.
